Exile on Main Street

A classic cover by Robert Frank for what may have been The Rolling Stones’ best album (nothing after it was as good, certainly):

love the cover, just never really ‘got’ the stones, and i found mick jagger’s faux black voice and posturing not too far removed from black and white minstrelcy frankly.

Yes, it’s a great cover isn’t it? we can agree on that, at least. As for what one ‘gets’ or not -well, I find about 80% of country music unlistenable, with its tedious self pity and unchallenging strumming. Maybe its about what one (chooses) to see/hear. I do think, though, that the problem you have with MJ’s voice -re ‘minstrelsy’ -is quite unfair. He is white. Along with the bulk of the UK blues revival, his thing was about translating one tradition into another. It sounds like minstrelsy to you: not to me.
