What about waking up to the reality of the situation?

Yes, Tom, why don’t you? who caused this economic crisis? do you suppose that further impoverishing Greek workers (20% of Greeks live in poverty) for the actions of the international finance sector and a greedy international class of parasites is acceptable? I don’t. And we’re next: the government says ‘we’re all in this together’ as they prepare to cut and cut. 18 out of 23 cabinet members are millionaires -so what an announcement like this actually mean? in the UK the rich pay a lower proportion of their income in taxes than do the low paid -and will now bear the brunt of the cuts. We’re planning to spend £75bn on Trident, too. Lovely.

Instead of just absorbing the soporific ideology pumped out by that lot, why not read something on this -like ‘The Enigma of Capital’ by David Harvey, for instance. It’d be an intellectual espresso for you. Might wake you up.

The “reality” Tom is referring to is an ideological construct, for which the mass-media is responsible for propagating. It is related to the paradox of economic “tough love” – love for the wealthy, tough for everyone else. This is true in the case of Greece, as it is for Britain where the government is about to slash benefits while cutting taxes for the rich. Because an incentive for a poor person is a decrease in income, but an incentive for a rich person is an increase income… Why is that?
