    Chris,

Well, you’re a better man than I am Gunga Din. I’ve been threatening to establish a blog or a website for years and just haven’t got around to it. So you win that little contest.
On happiness, I totally agree. Last year I red twelve books on happiness in preparation for a course on same. This was eminently worthwhile in various ways. I’m of your mind; we are incredibly lucky to be warm, healthy, well-fed, at peace, free from tyranny, free from fear, wit infinite aesthetic riches an arm’s length away.
Suggestions: you should put up a photo album. You take good photos (e.g. the one of the boat silhouetted against the sunset–conventional perhaps, but it’s still one of my screen saver shots. I’m a sucker for the Great Natural Scene with a small trace of humanity going about its businesss.

At the grand old age of 20 i believe i have found the key to happiness…well its a work in progress at any rate. For myself i have categorised 5 main elements of my life which i must keep in balance to be happy. The balance will change for different people so some will want more of one thing than someone else. The five elements are…

    Work – Play – Social – Intellectual – Physical

These five things feed into EMOTION, they are the ingredients.

Work gives you a sense of purpose, this will be your job. You might not even enjoy it, but without it you would feel useless.

Your social life keeps up your self-esteem, people need to be liked and acknowledged to feel happy.

To maintain your self-respect you must keep up a level of intellectualism (possibly a made up word…) You might do this by reading a bit of Shakespeare every so often, or keeping up with politics or studying a musical instrument.

Your body carries you through life and should be looked after. If it is not given the food, exercise and relaxation it needs it can make it very hard for you to find your balance.

And of course then there is play. ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, right. It is important to have a hobby, something that helps you relax and smile while your sub-conscience does the filing.

It is possible for these elements to over lap, which is great!!!

To use myself as an example, at this moment in time im moderately happy, not ecstatic, but not bad. I’m at university and that’s keeping me on my toes work wise. As long as i keep on top of my essays i feel satisfied. It also over lapse with my intellectual side, recently i’ve been studying Shakespeare and as a result i feel pleasantly smug.

I recently went through a phase of trying to stay uber fit and healthy (okay i wanted abs) and even though i never reached my original target i did indeed find my physical balance! Now i just make sure i do a fair bit of walking and cycling and don’t eat too much chocolate. This is actually the easiest element of your well being to maintain and maintain it you should because it can really drag you down emotionally.

For play i study the piano, that also over lapse with my intellectual side. It’s pretty much my only real hobby and if i am deprived of a piano for too long i get depressed and no doubt my brain starts to slow down.

My social side…ah, well here’s where the problem lies at the moment. Because of a surge in my work levels my social levels have dropped of late. I am currently an unbalanced person, only slightly. Now if this state remains for too long i will eventually get depressed.

Everyone will have their own balance. There will be some people who are so secure in themselves that they require absolutely no social life to be happy, but presumably, even they would eventually get lonely living on top of a mountain. They still have a social side; it just doesn’t need much maintenance.

I think i have just attempted to put into words what everyone really knows instinctively, the fact that it is written down does not really make it any easier to stay in balance. It requires a lot of energy and effort. Next time you feel low try and pinpoint which part/parts of you are being over worked or neglected. Then have a think about how you can get back into balance. The solution might be as simple as taking up knitting, or it might be as scary as quitting your job.

I am certain there are more than 5 elements to a person’s well being, i have just written those that are most important to me. A lot of people may also wish to add spirituality to their list, i have a spiritual side, its just quite content being ignored.

I look forward to seeing the great many flaws you people will spot in my Key to Happiness Philosophy, but i enjoyed writing this, and you can’t argue with that…(it exercised my intellectual side!!!)

Law Sol, I do agree, actually. Attitude is a huge part though, yes? (BTW you didnt post this on the happiness post so others – like me- might have trouble finding it! – copy and past into the ‘happiness ‘post to get more responses?)
I appreciate the thoughts though…makes one think
